The biological and agricultural resources on this land are significant, and intrinsically valuable. Through the efforts of the trust's founders, over 700 acres of the Ventura Foothills are now permanently protected, in perpetuity, for the benefit of the land as well as the enjoyment and appreciation of the public.
In the cooler, moist areas of Rancho Ventura stand our majestic oak woodlands. These ecosystems are not just beautiful, they are ecological powerhouses that provide oxygen, store carbon, and offer shade and habitat to countless wildlife species. The oaks, with their robust trunks and sprawling branches, are a testament to the land's resilience and longevity.
The open grasslands of Rancho Ventura are where the land truly comes alive, especially in spring when wildflowers carpet the ground with vivid color. These areas are essential for pollinators, ground-nesting birds, and a variety of mammals, showcasing the land's dynamic nature and ecological importance.
The dense chaparral cloaks the higher elevations with its evergreen shrubs and small trees, creating a rugged beauty that defines much of Southern California's wildlands. This habitat is adapted to the Mediterranean climate, supporting a variety of species from the California quail to the secretive mountain lion.
